Legacy Foundation Recipient: Downtown Gary Public Art Competition

Living Portrait: Gary in 1906 and 1968

I am interested in creating a public light mural in the urban space of Gary. The medium of video projection will activate the architectural surface with images of important historical figure Richard Gordon Hatcher. The mural painted on abandoned building depicts Richard Gorden Hatcher, the first African-American mayor. Video projection activates the portraits at night with moving images of the current community. The abandoned architecture of Gary contains over 90 years of storytelling. By installing a public light with mural within the community, I hope to reflect on how the past history connects to the present. I will engage the local community in painting on the exterior wall. The public artwork will empower the community and create a space of dialogue.
